QUESTION:
I hosted an event last night and can’t stop replaying it in my mind. So many more people showed up than I expected and it felt chaotic. I wish I would have done some things differently. How can I let this go?
ANSWER:
Every experience is for our growth and learning. Rather than critique how you showed up, give yourself grace for adjusting to unexpected circumstances. Our weaknesses are really just our strengths overused. What felt like a weakness to you? Maybe it was your distractedness when talking to someone or being flustered when talking in front of the group. You can celebrate your strengths and take note for how you want to improve.
Consider that the weakness of distractedness was really just your strength of managing multiple demands on your attention at once overused. This can really come in handy sometimes! Other times we crave focus. Let this be a reminder that your body is yearning to practice more presence during interactions.
What if feeling flustered was really just your desire to feel prepared and have things planned out taken to the extreme. You can quiet the replaying in your mind by assuring yourself that this is simply a signal to yourself that you want to work on being more flexible with results outside of your control.
Choosing to rewrite the story of your event with similar thoughts will lead to contentment and humility. You trust that everyone got what they needed from the event and God will make up for what you lack. Ether 12:27 – “My grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.” Look to God and He’ll help you find the balance and let it rest.
